The 1st to 4th November marked the revival of the World Scout Parliamentary Union¡¯s General Assembly. It had been seven years since the WSPU had met in General Assembly in Cairo, Egypt.
¡°Let¡¯s Keep the Scout Promise¡± was the theme of the meeting that included representatives from over 40 different countries. Along with a number of organizational and planning sessions, the participants were treated to a tour of dynamic Seoul along with educational tours to local museums and businesses. The evening receptions were an opportunity to strengthen the bonds of brotherhood between countries that support the global Scouting program.
A major portion of the meeting was focused on defending the human rights of children and involving youth in the decision making process.
During his keynote speech, Kenya¡¯s Vice President Kalonzo Musyoka urged world governments to influence policy to enable youth take up active decision making roles in national affairs.
Marija Lugari?, MP, Croatian Parliament spoke of the sad status of youth in many countries ¡°over than 200 million young people are living with less than $1 per day, more than 130 million are illiterate, over 10 million are HIV infected and more than 88 million young people are unemployed and many of them with poor prospect to find a job in close future.¡± Marija went on to describe the urgency to take action, ¡°At the same we say that young people are our future and there can not be future without new generation, new technology, new people, new ideas and new voices. Our task here is to give them and ourselves the opportunity to hear those voices of tomorrow ? today.¡±
The new President of the WSPU Chung, Ui Hwa from Korea said majority of the youth across the globe are deprived of their fundamental rights. ¡°They are suffering from dire situations where survival rather than human right is more urgent, the present is more important than the future,¡± he said.
The World Scout Parliamentary Union was created in Korea in 1991. It provides a firm cause to join hands with the World Organization of the Scout Movement in leading the effort to create a better world.
